My online journal, “Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?” started in January of 2007. At that time, I was maintaining a “family” site in TypePad so that our relatives back in Florida and Ohio could stay up-to-date with our growing family. Since I had an account on TypePad already, I created a new site with the goal of maintaining a virtual journal of my work and education.
After a couple months, I wanted to do some things that just weren’t easy (for me!) to do in TypePad. I had seen some of my blogging contacts who really loved WordPress, and in March of 2007 I started to ponder an eventual platform-switch. With the support of some of my new-found virtual friends, I opened a hosting account at GoDaddy in May of 2007 and successfully(?) transitioned the Universe to WordPress.
Instrumental in keeping me sane (and maintaining my permalinks!) during the transition, was this excellent write-up from someone who’s been there. I have quite a few incoming permalinks and they seem to have been maintained, and I even made the transition without breaking my FeedBurner feed. Outstanding!
In the first few weeks with the new site, I’ve experimented with a couple of themes, including Grid Focus (too stark for my tastes), Cutline (couldn’t quite get it to work the way I wanted), and OceanBech 1.0. As of June 26, 2007, I’ve settled on Subtle (formerly know as Glued Ideas). It’s got a pretty active development and support community, and even though it’s in version .391, it seems more mature than OceanBech which was a version 1.0 theme when I tried it.
The title, “Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?” is taken from one of my favorite poems of all time: The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot. The image used in the site’s banner was taken in September 2006 on my way to work. It was a beautiful fall morning and the sun was rising in the east blinding me on my morning commute, but casting a gorgeous pink glow on the foothills and mountains of Northern Colorado. The highest, snow-covered peaks in the middle are the Mummy Range.
And indeed there will be time
To wonder, “Do I dare?” and, “Do I dare?”
Time to turn back and descend the stair,
With a bald spot in the middle of my hair—
[They will say: “How his hair is growing thin!”]
My morning coat, my collar mounting firmly to the chin,
My necktie rich and modest, but asserted by a simple pin—
[They will say: “But how his arms and legs are thin!”]
Do I dare
Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.
